If you have bad credit and want to get an unsecured loan, you may have to do a bit of research and work before you'll get the loan you're looking for. It's not impossible to get an unsecured bad credit loan, but it is much more difficult. How difficult the process will be though, depends a lot on just how bad your credit is.
Many people don't understand how credit works, and if they've had even small credit problems in the past they simply assume they have bad credit and cannot get an unsecured loan. This isn't always the case. Small credit problems over the years don't always create as many problems with getting loans as you might think.
Now, if you've had a bankruptcy in the last ten years of course, then yes, you do have bad credit and you may have a very difficult time finding unsecured loans. There are places these days though who will give unsecured bad credit loans even to people who have had a bankruptcy, so all hope is not lost.
If you haven't had a bankruptcy, and you think your credit is bad but you're not quite sure of the details, then the first step is to get a copy of your credit report and credit score. A quick glance at the credit score will tell you how bad your credit might look as well. Anything below 540 is considered bad credit, and anything above about 600 is considered good credit. Between the two is where most people fall though, and this is considered to be moderate credit.
Looking at your credit history will help even further. If you have a lot of past due accounts, your credit is looked at as being bad. If however, you simply have one or two small problems from several years ago, your credit is not as bad as you thought and you'll have an easier time getting unsecured loans. If you have defaulted loans and judgments on your credit history report though, this makes your credit worse and will make it harder for you to get an unsecured bad credit loan.
Some people have no real past problems on their credit reports, but their credit score is in the bad range for other reasons. They've changed jobs or living locations frequently for instance, or they've had several recent credit inquiries. These items can lower your credit score temporarily.
It's also quite common to find completely wrong information on your credit report too. Accounts might be listed which you've never had for instance. Or you may have paid off accounts in good standing, but it was never updated on your credit report.
These are all important reasons to keep an eye on your credit report. Anyone can have credit problems, but by knowing for sure just how bad your credit is, you're more equipped to approach lenders and get unsecured bad credit loans.
There are many lenders who will give loans to people with bad credit too. Some of these lenders will only work with people who's credit isn't too bad, while others will work with the worst credit situations you can think of. They all have their individual requirements though, so knowing your specific credit issues will help you to know which lenders are more likely to work with you.
