What Can A Government Grant
Can Do For You?

It is a common misconception that the US Government just gives away money with no strings
attached in the form of federal grants.  While grant money never has to be repaid, it comes
with specific obligations on the part of the recipient.

Most federal grants are awarded not to individuals, but to organizations that agree to complete a
project or perform some service that will benefit the community.  This type of grant is known
as a
project grant.  Rather than a gift, the grant is a reciprocal agreement where the government
is exchanging money for services.  Grant money is to be used for projects that benefit the
community at large, or a certain segment of the population.

An organization wishing to receive federal grant money must submit a detailed plan of the
project proposal, including how and when each phase of the phase of the project will be
completed.  Regular audits will be conducted to make sure that each phase of the project is
completed on time, and that all of the money awarded is being used on the project.  All
conditions of the grant award must be met, and any funds not used must be returned to the
department of the treasury.  Failure to meet the conditions of the agreement could result in stiff
financial penalties, or even legal action.

Government grant money awarded to individuals is usually to help make
housing available to
lower income families, or to college students who need assistance in the form of Pell Grants.
These grants do not require the same amount of paperwork as project grants, but they do,
however, require the recipient to demonstrate a need for the money and meet all other eligibility
requirements.  In addition to housing and educational funding, other categories of federal grant
money available to individuals include job training, health care assistance, and unemployment
insurance.

The federal government offers no direct small business grant programs, but does offer loans at
very attractive interest rates for starting a new business or expanding an existing business
venture.  The Small Business Administration will often guarantee repayment for lenders
extending small business loans, and assists businesses in finding capital for expansion.  Small
business grants are available from the governments of most  US states

If you want to go it alone in your search for grant money, the information can be found on the
internet and at the public library.  However, to save a lot of time in finding and applying for
grant money both public and private, there are third party grant assistance companies that offer
software and access to databases of available grant programs searchable by keyword and type
of grant.  They also offer instructions on how to put together grant applications that maximize
your chances of being awarded money.  The better companies back their programs with a
money-back guarantee, so there is no risk to you in trying their services.  You could save
countless hours of research, and find
applying for grant money much more enjoyable.
